Columbus Voters Affirm Smoking Ban; Push Now On For Statewide Ban

An effort to exempt bars having 65% or more in alcohol sales from the Columbus smoking ban was drubbed at the polls yesterday by a count of 56% - 44%. A statewide push started yesterday with a petition drive involving 700 volunteers in 50 states. Ban proponents plan on garnering 100,000 signatures by November. About 6,000 signatures were collected yesterday. If a petition with enough valid signatures on it is received by the Ohio General Assembly, and the GA fails to act on it or tries to modify it, the SmokeFree Coalition will go to Ohio voters with a November 2006 ballot issue.

The above was pieced together from stories in the 5/4/2005 Columbus Dispatch.
